Comic Critics

As I was travelling via phone cord, I came across a small site that made me so fucking angry. For those of you who read my ramblings : http://www.cringehumor.net/forums/showthread.php?t=292 - here, visit it yourself. I was utterly appalled by the opinions of those who supposedly are comedy buffs. These people do nothing but trash the hard work of established and up and coming comedians - which I think is disgusting. It wouldn't hurt to keep an open mind about many comedians you hear nowadays.

I tend to watch as much stand up as I possibly can (when I can) to keep up with the new talent. I must admit some of them do not impress me all that much, but I would give them the time of day should they require it. I would not go off on a tangent about how I hated every minute of their act and that they should piss off and die. No, that's not what you do! You focus on the bits you did like, and if you didn't like any of them - don't watch them again. Simple as that.

You do not go on some mission to bag the shit out of them to hundreds of people on the internet. Especially not over little things, like how you don't like their voice - for fucks sake! Their voice? How sad are these people? Fucking cry babies. Ow, their voice hurts my ears....one solution - don't listen to them. For example, I love Dane Cook's work - but I'm not that big of a fan when he jumps around the stage like a madman, I feel that I tire of it a bit. But I still applaud him for his efforts. Someone out there obviously likes him.

I want to take this oppourtunity to plug Dan Naturman's work. He is a brilliant stand up comic and should be praised for all the effort he puts in to delivering a fantastic routine - regardless of how he does it. My point here is that if you truly enjoy comedy, you will overlook any fine details like that and pay attention to the raw materials and enjoy it. I didn't even think that someone's voice would be an issue, but there you go - there's always gotta be someone who's a downer, probably jealous that they can't put together a few characters to make a word - ehuk! (my attempt at a hick-ish noise, lol I suck)

And another thing - bagging comedians that use their ethnicity to get laughs is just down right rude and nasty. I would like to take this chance to quote the website -

Dat Phan
Categories: Simply Awful, Ethnic Garbage
Description: This hack's total act consists of one awful accent. He relies on his cultural heritage to get laughs. If he wasn't Vietnamese he would have no act! we can tell by your eyes and flat face that you're Asian. No need to remind us every damn seconds you're on stage. Stick to LA and be a middle until the day you kill yourself in shame

How racist and utterly fucked in the head do you have to be to say something like that? Good on Dat Phan for using his upbringing and heritage to his advantage! I think that drawing on believable experiences to get your routine is perfectly alright. I would if I was any good - my family's the next best thing to drunken disorganized crime, honestly! (My grandfather was Cypriot and he married a Belgian woman). But anyways, my point is that if any comedian can make someone laugh by ANY means possible - and I mean ANY, whether it be generally putting a humourous outlook over an ethnic group or just simple observational humour - then so be it, and no one should have the right to say otherwise. Hah!
